It’s time to rethink our city edges!
A recent essay by Deicke Richards director Peter Richards throws down the gauntlet to his urban design and academic colleagues. “If we are to build better places to live in, we need to reconsider our current suburban development forms on the edge of cities as urban places but in a suburban context” he says. Using the former Maroochy Shire in South East Queensland as a case study, Peter’s analysis of demographic projections of the community determined the range of household types that he says will be needed in the future. “This piece of research helps identify local settlement typologies and it is this understanding that is key to building innovative neighbourhoods on the Sunshine Coast and other regions” says Richards who is also an Adjunct Professor at QUT. read more »
Welbeck Street Acknowledged in Brisbane News
The project is an extension to an existing 1949 weather board home for a couple and their three children. The project capitalises on the leafy views of Brisbane's north with a generous yet understated extension to the rear of the house. The Sub-Tropical design draws on the language of the simple and economical skillions boxes that were often added to the rear of these houses to accommodate the Baby Boomers on the 50’s. Materials were chosen to compliment those used on the original house. Of interest is that house was originally built by the long standing Brisbane builder, Chapman's as their family home where they resided for many years. The client insisted the current generation of Chapmans be selected as the builders for this project. The old cubby house in the back yard was probably one of Greg Chapmans first building projects as a child. read more »
