Forum plans future for Kilgariff, Northern Territory
20 Apr 2011
Deicke Richards’ connection to the Northern Territory continues with Peter Richards and Cassie Boyle among a team of designers who led the Kilgariff Enquiry by Design Forum earlier this month on behalf of the Northern Territory Government.
Kilgariff, 9km from the centre of Alice Springs, is located along the Stuart Highway between the Arid Zone Research Institute and the Alice Springs Airport.
The four-day forum, with more than 40 participants, was a key step towards planning a new suburb and desert community for the area. It explored how Kilgariff might provide a mixed-used urban development with a focus on housing affordability and sustainability for an ultimate population of up to 10,000.
The forum also considered the development’s integration with plans for commercial, employment and residential uses on nearby airport land.
The outcomes are in the process of being documented and will be made available for public comment.
