World Kitchen Garden Day

29 Aug 2011

World Kitchen Garden Day, held on the fourth Sunday of August, celebrates growing and using home grown and local produce. Family, neighbours and friends get together to share a menu, which incorporates organic ingredients from their gardens or from the local area. The day encourages people to think about local food options and to learn about growing their own food and using seasonal ingredients.

Each year Associate Director Arno King hosts a lunch to celebrate World Kitchen Garden Day. ‘Growing food or sourcing local produce is one of the most significant things we can all do to reduce our environmental footprint,’ says Arno. ‘The production and distribution of food accounts for some 40% of energy use and 80% of freshwater use.’

The next World Kitchen Garden Day is on 26 August 2012.
