A green wall on the new Airport Link Motorway is one of the few green walls associated with infrastructure in the world. Located inbound on Airport Link, the green wall borders the road as it descends beneath Sandgate Road and Kalinga Park.
Deicke Richards were part of the creative team and provided expert horticultural services relating to plant design, planting media and irrigation requirements. One of the key challenges was to develop a system that had a 40-year life cycle. We developed a proposed list of plants, sourced propagation material, undertook planting design, and developed a maintenance manual for the project. Plant selection was based on evaluating plants that had performed successfully in other warm climates. A trial wall was constructed as part of the project to further evaluate plants and to test mulch matting and media options.
The green wall panels were installed in September 2011. Airport Link is scheduled to open in 2012 and will be the first major motorway linking Brisbane city to the northern suburbs and the Brisbane Airport precinct.
