Grandview Drive Residence is a small private holiday home on a sloping site at Coolum on the Sunshine Coast. Deicke Richards was commissioned to provide full architectural services for the design and construction of the new three-bedroom beach house. The brief was to deliver a simple, elegant design that could comfortably cater for multiple users and reflect the ideals of an extended family.
The design responds to the challenging topography of the site by arranging a series of overlapping pavilions along a meandering stair. The stair creates a positive connection with the ground, reinforced through a series of landings and built-in seating. Spaces within the house are practical and open, with careful visual links between each other, the ocean and the naturally landscaped surrounds. The sequence of views and vistas terminates at the main deck for the house, which is protected from the strong south-easterly winds typical of the region.
The house resolves desires for both openness and security. Storage areas and built-in furniture are appropriate to a holiday home. Careful attention was given to all aspects of the construction of the house to achieve a relaxed yet highly resolved outcome.
