The principles of Vastu Shastra have shaped the landscape design for the Hare Krishna Temple at Seventeen Miles Rock, south-west of Brisbane’s CBD. An ancient Indian science, Vastu Shastra is said to benefit mental peace, health, wealth and happiness. The philosophy influences the choice of site; locations of buildings and roofs; the direction of falls across the site; selection of materials; locations of different landscape uses; and the inclusion of auspicious trees and plants.
Deicke Richards completed master planning and landscape design for the project. The temple and ashram buildings are located on a highly prominent site. Views to the buildings from the surrounding areas will be screened by vegetation. The site is steep and the gardens are located on a series of terraces sloping to the north-west. The project also includes revegetation of adjacent bushland to create a seamless flow to the traditional gardens.
