Stage 1 of this $2.5m project provides a new library, administration facilities and a multimedia precinct, funded through the Federal Government’s Building the Education Revolution (BER) program. It was completed in early 2011.
The school initially commissioned Deicke Richards, on a pro-bono basis, to prepare a comprehensive master plan in 2008. This collaborative process involved parents, students, staff and parish members. The resulting strategy created a series of ‘streets’ and public spaces within the site and distributed learning areas and community facilities to the edges of the property, promoting community engagement. This approach met social sustainability principles consistent with the school’s emphasis on social justice, life-long learning and equity.
The master plan required the removal of inefficient and poorly located school and parish buildings. These have been replaced by an open courtyard – a central space at the most elevated part of the hilltop site. The space is shared by the school, community and parish and is bordered by the new L-shaped building. Its orientation, design features and materials contribute to a high level of sustainability outcomes.
Stage 2 of the project is under construction. It will provide an open multi-purpose learning area and a community cooking facility.
