Mackay Local Area Plan & City Centre Strategy

Client: Mackay Regional Council

Mackay Regional Council commissioned a consortium led by Deicke Richards to map out the city’s future. In conjunction with Lat 27, Cardno, Elton Consulting, AEC and Buckley Vann, Deicke Richards completed a background study and engaged Council, the community and other city stakeholders in an intensive enquiry by design process to investigate the future of the city centre. The Mackay City Centre is the principal activity centre of the growing Mackay region, which has a projected population of 200,000 by 2031. Mackay has a history of innovation, being the first city in Queensland to have a town plan. This new work has informed the City Centre Strategy and Local Area Plan.

The City Centre Strategy, prepared separately by Deicke Richards, sets a new agenda for the city centre in terms of city living, built form and character, land use, transport and the public realm. The City Strategy provides direction for the management of future growth and a vision for the city’s built form to ensure a more sustainable future.
